I do plan to attend the meeting on Monday to state my objections and concerns in person. Unfortunately I was sick and running a fever of almost 102 and my husband was out of state with his mother as his father had just been placed in hospice care. I read comments from a council member that stated sending email comments is easier than making the effort to attend in person, but with all due respect, sometimes it is not possible to attend meetings in person as was our case on February 27 and we had legitimate concerns that we wanted to voice as we live in this area. We have but one chance to get this right! Please let's do the right thing to preserve the beauty of Milton as these variances are in direct conflict with the Birmingham Master Plan, the Milton Overlay and the original zoning and zoning modifications that have already been sought. Please adhere to the plans that have been developed and approved! Developers come and go, but we have to live with what's left behind. That said, I would like to state for inclusion to the official record that I am opposed to the approval of these variances. The buffer, the setback, and the greenspace have great impact on the look and feel of the crossroads today. If the variances are approved, we lose the beautiful rural look of Milton at that intersection that so many of you campaigned on when running for office. I ask that you support your campaign platform and do as much as possible to keep Milton's beautiful rural look at that intersection. I also ask that GDOT be involved immediately to look at traffic patterns for that intersection and come up with a solution for easing the congestion now rather than later. We only have one chance to get this right. Let's work together and do the right thing for Milton, please. I am monitoring the weather now, and it looks as though North Fulton may be in for severe weather later this afternoon and evening. That being the case, I may or may not be at the meeting tonight. do not plan to risk personal safety, and I hope you understand. I am submitting respectfully my comments for inclusion to public record. I ask that each of you take the time to review my concerns and request for denial before you vote tonight. I live less than a mile from the Crossroads and this proposed development is very important to me. My comments are as follows: 1. After reviewing the information in the agenda packet, it is my understanding that staff has recommended these two concurrent variances be denied. 1 presume staff has looked at all legal aspects and is comfortable with any Legal issues that may arise by the developer if the variances are denied. 1 request you follow staff's recommendation and DENY both concurrent variances. 2. Although I am fairly new to Milton and still learning about all of the plans and zoning laws in place, I do understand there is the Rural Milton Overlay District and Birmingham Crossroads Overlay District in place. It appears the buffer and setback are addressed in the Rural Milton Overlay District. These are addressed for reason, and I would expect the City Council to follow what is in place and not give in to a developer's greed and demand to remove them so he can ultimately add more density. I did not participate in the development of the Rural Milton Overlay District or the Birmingham Crossroads Overlay District, but I am sure several people spent countless hours working to come up with standards for this area that would allow for development while preserving as much of the rural look as possible. I would hope that you each would respect the time, energy and effort that has gone into development and not deviate from the requirements set forth in both Overlay Districts. Why would you even think about deviating from guidelines that have already been approved to protect Milton and its citizens? Why give in to greedy developers who only care about making as much money as they can and then leaving? We are the people who voted you in office, not the developers. You should represent us, not them!!!! Adhere to what we have and make no exceptions. 3. Developers come and go. Developers are known to make threatening comments to get their way. When they get their way, they develop and leave. We, the residents who live in the shadows of their greed are left to deal with all of the exceptions that were made. Please do not make exceptions in this case. The development will change the landscape at the Crossroads forever. I humbly request you do all that you can to preserve as much of the rural beauty that you can. If the developer is not happy with Milton's guidelines, perhaps he should not have invested in this rural area. Please uphold the zoning laws currently in place to protect Milton and the people who live there. 4. Milton does not currently have the infrastructure in place to support the Birmingham Crossroads as it is developed today let alone when the SE corner is developed. Please be mindful to that and deny both of these Concurrent Variances. Milton needs to focus on expanding the current infrastructure to meet today's needs before any further development is approved for the Birmingham Crossroads area. In the four years we have lived in Milton, we have seen traffic at the Crossroads go from bad to worse and traffic improvements are long overdue at this area. The SE corner development will further add to that traffic as will thenewballfields being built just outside the city of Milton in Cherokee County on 372. You cannot continue to build out this area without improving the infrastructure to keep up with the development. Again, developers come and go, but we are left to deal with the aftermath of their creations! 5. This development should be made with as much of a rural look and feel as possible. Those of us who live in this area do not want a Windward Parkway looking SE corner at the Birmingham Crossroads. In closing, in the short time we have lived in Milton, we have listened to many of you make campaign promises. Those promises were made to the people of Milton and not to developers. You have said if elected you will stand for the people. You will stand for Milton. You will preserve the rural look and feel of Milton. You will preserve the beauty of Milton. You have campaigned on change and to do the right thing for the people. Please remember that when you vote on these two Concurrent Variances tonight. If you vote to deny these requests, you are voting for the people of Milton. If you vote to approve these requests, you are voting for the greed of developers and not for us. If you vote to approve these variances, we will remember that should you seek re-election. Remember, you are in your elected positions because we, the people of Milton, put you there. We listened to you to do the right thing for Milton and the people who live here. The developers who will come and go did not elect you to office nor will they have any vote when 2 you seek another term. We will be the ones to remember if you worked to make Milton a better place to live for the people or if you worked for greedy developers who want to change the landscape forever. You the City Council have one opportunity tonight to speak for the SE Corner of the Birmingham Crossroads. Please vote to deny these two Concurrent Variances as recommended by City Staff and by many residents of Milton who truly care about the future of Milton and its landscape. Sincerely, Debbie Beauchamp 500 Hickory Mill Lane Milton, GA 30004 470-268-7407
