HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - CAC - 06/13/2017Cultural Arts Board of Directors Meeting Minutes Tuesday, June 13, 2017; 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM Milton City Hall Sarah LaDart called the meeting to order at 11:40 AM. Roll call was taken. All of the Board of Directors were present: Laurie Goodling, Emily Griffith, Megan Jamison, Barbara Peck, Bill Purdie, Bob Stewart. One Board of Directors position still remains unfilled. An election of an Interim Chairman, Vice Chairman and Secretary was held. The following were elected to hold these positions: Bill Purdie - Interim Chairman Megan Jamison - Vice Chairman Barbara Peck – Secretary Board Members discussed at length the vision and the development of a Cultural Arts Master Plan for the City of Milton. Sarah distributed the Master Plan for the City of Decatur that may be used as a model for Milton’s planning process. The estimated timeline to develop a master plan for the city is six to eight months. It was agreed that it would be beneficial to invite a member of the Decatur Cultural Arts Committee to one of our upcoming meetings and to have our members attend the September Decatur Literary Festival. Sarah will contact the City of Decatur. The definition of art was also discussed. The group’s original list included painting, sculpture, live music performances (concerts), and live dramatic performances (plays). The literary spoken word, including but not limited to, stand up comedy, book readings, and poetry were suggested as additions to the original list. Courtney Spriggs, Community Outreach Manager, joined the group to discuss how cultural arts could be integrated into city events. Christmas In Crabapple was discussed at length. Megan suggested reviving an old custom whereby each business owner placed a small tree with white lights in front of their building. Options for motivating event participants to visit local Crabapple businesses were also discussed. Funding sources and organizational structure were also discussed. The committee will apply for available grant monies. Partnering with the Alpharetta Arts Committee will help to drive some of our initiatives. Cultural Arts will be an active partner with the Milton Parks and Recreation Department. Plans for an amphitheater are currently under consideration. The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 PM.
