Housekeeping Issues: The minutes from March 5 and March 13, 2008 were accepted. Agenda: The Agenda for this meeting is attached. The discussion continued on the logo and primarily on honing in on the wording for the mission statement. Mission Statement Versions: There was a brief discussion on whether or not we would have a "Vision" statement as well as a "Mission" statement — the mission being more specific and the vision being something broader such as: "Milton will be a nationally recognized green community." Someone suggested that we also wanted breathable air and drinkable water. In the end the decision was made not to pursue writing a vision statement. We want to: ■ 1. responsibly manage growth; • 2. conserve resources; and 3. preserve of Milton's natural landscape and heritage for future generations We plan to accomplish this by: • influencing public policy and • educating the community The mission statement was narrowed down to three possibilities: A. [To encourage] [Encouraging] responsibly managed growth by conserving resources and protecting and preserving Milton's natural landscape [for future generations] [forever] through community education and influencing policy. B. [To encourage] [Encouraging] responsibly managed growth by conserving resources and [protecting] [preserving] Milton's natural landscape [for future generations] [forever] through community education and influencing policy. [To encourage] [Encouraging] responsibly managed growth, [resource conservation] [conservation of resources] and preservation of MiIton's natural landscape [for future generations] [forever] through community education and influencing policy. It was agreed that the last two clauses lacked parallel structure and these needed more work. The consensus was to stay away from the wording "and policy development" which was viewed as too controversial. Majority favored "for future generations" over "forever," but no unanimity. Earth Hour: Cindy Eade talked about "Earth Hour," March 29 at 8:00 pm, when people across the globe are asked to turn off their lights for an hour. Should we get involved and promote it? How does Milton adopt it or are we too late to try at this point? The consensus was to just encourage local papers to make note of it but this would not be a committee initiative. Logo Discussion: The suggestions for changes in the logo were to change the script to something more formal for the words "Grows Green," to change the "s" in Grows Green, to change the color of the path to something less green and to extend the path so that the lettering didn't have to curve up the right side of the path. Standing Subcommittees: Discussed the need to further refine what each standing subcommittee was going to be working on and the need to prioritize the top projects within each committee. We need to start the education process before the regulations are in place. Need to submit the logo, mission statement and a paragraph — expansion of mission statement, to CPAC so it can be included in the plan. It would be great if we could get something together to have reviewed by the planning commission: what's new • what has Fulton County and the City of Milton already adopted — existing codes and standards • what's the next step up • what are the near term priorities ■ what incentives can the city offer to encourage the initiative Recycling: Comprehensive Recycling Plan needs to be set up - make sure haulers are offering recycling as a condition of certification, and/or examine whether "single stream" can be offered at a cheaper cost to both hauler and homeowner; find out if a discount for recycling or a fixed cost per unit of trash should be charged to encourage conservation and recycling. Water Conservation: Identify new ways to conserve water — rain barrels or cisterns. Would it be practical to find a builder to build a model development or model home that incorporates these suggestions and others -- standards that truly work over the long haul? Our suggestions need to be really solid based on measurable results. April 26 celebration of Earth Day: Our first opportunity to educate the community and introduce the Milton Grows Green committee to the community. Melissa and Francia to get together and develop the elements for handouts. This event is also an opportunity to get community input and more volunteers: Milton Grows Green Committee Minutes March 19, 2008 p. 2 ALL MILTON GROWs GREEN DOCUMENTS ARE PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER WITH AT LEAST 350/6 POST -CONSUMER CONTENT. • post a list standing subcommittees and types of things they will be working on; ■ have a sign-up sheet; • have hand-outs of eco-friendly consumer tips and general information on environment; • have T-shirts for people manning the booth Note _ Standing subcommittee being further defined: Land Use and Building Standards (LUBS): Kathi, Mark Law, Jack, Melinda, Paul, Jon Next Meeting: Thursday, March 27, 2008 12:00 noon.
