Milton Grows Green Committee
Minutes April 2, 2008 [APPROVED]
Date: April 2, 2008, 6:00 — 8.00 pm
Place: City of Milton Executive Conference Room
Attendees: Julie Zahner Bailey, Jon McPhail, Francia Lindon, Tim Enloe, Dan Conniff and Paul
Hackman. (Input from those who could not attend had been received via email prior to the meeting
re: Mission Statement, Executive Summary, etc.)
Agenda: Finalizing the Executive Summary and accompanying letter to CPAC.
General Information: During the previous week Julie confirmed with Chris Lagerbloom, Dan
Drake and Linda Blow that the Adapt -A -Road program has been incorporated into the Milton
Grows Green Committee. We will officially include it as part of the 3 "Rs" subcommittee. Linda
Blow briefly attended the meeting and confirmed:
• Fulton County is bowing out in that there will be no more funding for this program from them;
• There is a stock pile of posts and signs from last year's budget;
• Volunteers connected to the Adopt -A -Road program have been notified about being added to
the Milton Grows Green Committee. Milton Grows Green will craft a communication to those
volunteers to include them in this sub -committee activity once a date is determined for that next
meeting;
■ The 3Rs subcommittee needs to hold a separate meeting regarding Adopt -A -Road to discuss
signage with our logo and whatever information they want to incorporate along with the
name(s) of the individuals or businesses adopting the road, procedures and policies, how many
roads can be adopted by one groups or individual(s), how best to track the required clean-ups,
sign design so sign is in concert with Overlay requirements including the materials, i.e. possibly
a sandblasted, recyclable materials (involve DRB once suggestions are drafted, etc.);
• There are no funds in the budget for this program this year. We will need to identify how to
fund the Adapt -a -Road program — it may need to be discussed as a mid -year budget request
especially given there were funds last year that went unexpended and then they were not carried
over.
• Action Item: Francia is to do a mock up of a sample sign with our logo. We also needed to see
the Logo in two color with the path going from the dark green to light green using the same hue
of green for economy in printing. Quotes from sign companies that do sandblasted signs would
be helpful to assess reasonability of sign suggestions.
Corer Letter to CPAC re Milton Grows Green Executive Summary: The members present
redrafted a final version of the cover letter.

■ It was agreed that a timeline from CPAC to the MGG committee is desirable so that we will
know when to submit recommendations to CPAC for them to be included in the plan: "Please
advise us when these recommendations are needed by CPAC for inclusion in the Plan."
■ All the MGG committee members would not be signatories to the Cover Letter and the
Executive Summary going to CPAC, we would sign it "as a committee;"
• It wasn't certain that the documentation was going to be presented at the next CPAAC Meeting.
Julie had contacted Tom Wilson who noted it would be helpful to have the Executive Summary
and Cover Letter ahead of the meeting so she provided that to him on behalf of the committee
and per his request.
■ Copies of the Cover Letter and the Executive Summary would be sent to the consultant John
Ford of BRPH;
■ Final versions would also be sent to Chris Lagerbloom and Lisa Maggart so she could be
thinking about a press release on MGG.
Standing Subcommittees: Five have been identified at this point. We need to identify a person
who will act as chair for each subcommittee and get them mobilized. The committees and those
who have expressed specific interest to date are listed below. Other committee members can be
added once those people identify the committees with which they wish to participate:
■ Certifications and Designations. Identify grants and designations to apply for that would give
broader recognition to the city and distinguish it as environmentally sensitive. (Melissa Estes,
Melinda McConnell and Ifathi Cook
■ Water conservation and quality, Air quality and Energy conservation. Investigate areas of
concern including storm water run-off reduction, better erosion control methods, reduction of
impervious surfaces to reduce storm -water runoff, and promotion of rain barrels and other
rainwater collection systems. (Jack Lindon, Cindy Eade, Eddie Moore and Marc Arrington)
■ Land Use and Building Standards. Preserve open spaces, conserve land and trees, and identify
heritage trees and vistas. Promote adoption of building standards and techniques that are more
environmentally sensitive and energy efficient. (Mark Law, Melinda McConnell, Melissa Estes,
Jon McPhail, Jack Lindon and Paul Hackman)
■ Solid Waste Management. Encourage the 3 "Rs," Reduce, Recycle and Reuse. Suggest ways
city agencies could incorporate these principles as well as identifying viable alternatives for
residents. Includes Adopt -a -Road. (Charlie Slade, Dan Drake, Don Cunni and Marc
Arrington)
■ Communication and Education. Activities directed toward influencing public policies and
private choices. (Julie Zahner Bailey, Francia Lindon, Melissa Estes, Jon McPhail and Eddie
Moore)
April 26 Materials for MGG: The decision was made to keep the size of the logo on the T-shirt
fairly small, pocket -sized. Also discussed but not decided was whether or not to have shirts with a
collar and/or in a color other than white. Tina was mentioned as a source for information of this.
Francia brought in AveryC Ink Jet T-Shirt Transfers, a 6-sheet package that would allow
individuals to iron on the logo on their own. (www.avery.com/homecomer}. Julie also provided a
contact to Francia for purposes of pricing t-shirts should that be an option.

There was a review of the web sites listed on the draft Milton Grows Green introductory pamphlet
and further refuting it.
• check politics at the door - no hard political stances should be taken; in other words, be mindful
that this information needs to speak to all audiences. The goal is to inform, educate and engage
the community in "Green" approaches.
• list actions first then list the web site; i.e., rainwater collection systems,
www.conservationtechnology.com, and recycle business clothing, www.dressforsuccess.org
• identify contact people for other volunteers who might be interested
• incorporate more of the Executive Summary in final version
• reorder page layout
• add some graphics as visual components
■ once closer to a final draft format, provide to a few folks off-line to get any suggested edits or
other ideas.
■ Provide to Chris Lagerbloom once closer to a solid draft for his review and then to see if he
wants to have Lisa Maggart take a look at it for a possible press release about the Committee
when appropriate.
Other suggestions for the April 260 booth included:
• Mural paper where kids could draw what it means to be green to them
• Poster listing subcommittees and Sign up sheet
■ Desk top sandwich board with Logo, Mission Statement and Executive Summary
• Subsequent to this meeting, the committee was made aware that the April 261h Spring Event had
been called off . These materials and introductory information are still necessary for the Milton
Grows Green Committee regardless, so materials development continues.
Next Meeting: Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. in
the City of Milton Executive Conference room
Minutes APPROVED by the Governing Board this 121h day of June 2009.
