HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - MGG - 05-01-2008ORIGINAL Milton o, ■ Date: May 1, 2008, t2:30 1:30 p.m. Milton Grows Green Committee Minutes May 1, 2008 [APPROVED] Place: City of Milton Executive Conference Room Attendees: Marc Arrington, Cindy Eade, Francia Lindon and Jon McPhail Agenda: • Check on subcommittee formation progress and offer suggestions. ■ Request efforts toward new "Adapt -A -Road" sign designs. • Discuss Marc Arrington's request for some type of "certification" of grey -water experiments. • Steps to recharge the subcommittees with special emphasis on suggestions related to MGG's contributions to the Comprehensive Land Use Plan. General Information: Minutes of the April 14, 2008 meeting were adopted. Julie indicated by email that she had followed up with Chris Lagerbloom after our last meeting regarding a website presence and a press release for the committee of the City of Milton website. This had been sent to Lisa Maggert with the City and she has it on her "to-do" list. Action Item - "Adopt -A -Road": Francia Lindon and Cindy Eade agreed to create a mock-up of an Adapt -A -Road sign using the MGG logo. The idea was to make signs from a type of recycled plastic composite with a wood -grain look so the final product looked like a "wood cut." The phrase: "About to litter? Reconsider" would be considered for inclusion. The adopter's name would be placed on a smaller, separate (replaceable) sign attached to the bottom of the main sign. Discussion: Marc Arrington raised the idea of "certifications" or some type of city signage for residents who are attempting to incorporate "green" ideas such as rainwater collection and grey - water reuse for the benefit of neighbors and the curious, i.e., "Milton Grows Green Grey -water reuse exhibit;" or "This landscape is being watered by rainwater harvesting;" or the like. In "endorsing" different groups' points of view there is a need to distinguish between what is appropriate vs. what is a nuisance. The city could outline an acceptable process or procedure that could sidestep these potential problem areas. The discussion and the questions circled back to the Certification and Designations subcommittee to explore the possible designations the city might adopt. Jon reported on his investigation of different building standards already available for designation by the appropriate department and indicated that the LUGS subcommittee should also investigate types of incentives to provide builders and homeowners a positive reason to adopt higher standards, in addition to requiring them via mandates. As an example, the process of getting Milton Grows Green Committee Minutes May 1, 2008 [Approved] P.LL MII,TON GROWS GREEN DOCUMENTS ARE PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER WITH AT LEAST 35% POST-cONSUMER CONTENT. a building permit was discussed. The city could adopt a revenue -neutral multi -tier permit process that was tied to the application's level of adherence to various environmentally efficient building standards. The LUBS subcommittee should investigate an environment- friendly points system that would charge differing amounts for building permits based on adherence to, for example, the GA builders' "Earth. Craft" various certification levels. Presumably the higher costs of construction would translate into homes with higher values and a higher tax base for the city over time. Francia presented an updated version of the tri-fold brochure originally intended for the City of Milton "Spring Event," but which we now anticipate using as a more general information piece for distribution and posting on the webpage once it is up and running. Given the four members present and the committee's desire to have the subcommittees move forward with their particular areas of concern, those present agreed to each take the lead with one subcommittee in "getting the ball rolling." Jon will email the LUBS subcommittee members, Francia the Certification and Designations subcommittee, Cindy the Water, Air & Energy subcommittee, and Marc the Solid Waste (RRR) subcommittee, with the goal of facilitating a meeting or email discussion of the items set forth by each subcommittee as provided in the last meeting. Target date: May 8, 2008. Cindy has been added to the Solid Waste (RRR) subcommittee, and Francia to the Certification and Designations subcommittee to correct errors in those membership lists. The next meeting was set for Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the City of Milton Executive Conference Room Minutes APPROVED by the Governing Board this 120 day of June 2009. r ATTEST: Jon B.
