HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - MGG - 05-14-2008ORIGINAL Milton Milton Grows Green Committee Minutes May 14, 2008 [APPROVED] Date: May 14, 2008, 5:00 - —6:15 p.m. Place: City of Milton, Executive Conference Room Attendees: Jim Losen (Waste Management), Julie Zahner Bailey, Francia Lindon, Jack Lindon, Allen Tart, and Marc Arrington Agenda: (attached) General Information: Minutes from May 1, 2008 were adopted unanimously Reports from subcommittees: ■ Water, Air and Energy subcommittee - Cindy Eade, Marc Arrington and Tom Sewell met during the week at Hudsons Grill. Cindy has notes of the meeting. • 311s subcommittee (including Waste Management) - Jim mentioned that with "single stream" recycling it isn't necessary to separate the various recyclable materials. a A list of the approved solid haulers is now on the city web site _ need to see if individual haulers offer recycling options. + State requires all municipalities establish a recycle program - Milton needs to demonstrate what it is doing along these lines by December of 2008. + Need to identify possible locations for setting up recycle centers — Harry's was mentioned. ■ Adopt -A -Road: Francia provided 3 possible designs for a sign based on the MGG logo and the idea discussed previously, that a separate smaller sign would be attached under the main sign indicating the names of the people or the organization adopting the road. Julie Milton Grows Green Committee Minutes May 14, 2008 [Approved] ALL MILTON GROWS GREEN DOcuMENTS ARE PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER wITN AT LEAST 35% POST -CONSUMER CONTENT. discussed having the sign made from recycled materials. It was unclear from the discussion how explicit the detail of the design needed to be and what the final product would look like. It was agreed that we needed to see an example of the material and/or a finished sign to have a better idea on how to draw the design. Kathi Cook was mentioned as a possible source for names of specialty printers. Generally the committee liked a darker green background. There was a question asked as to whether anyone had any data on whether the signs really worked to reduce litter. We also needed more opinions on using "adopt -a -road" for recognition vs. using different slogans, i.e. "throwing trash will cost you cash," for getting attention. ■ Communications subcommittee - Milton Grows Green information has been added to the Milton web site. We now need to "populate" the site with useful tools and information What are we going to do as a city to educate? ■ Identify S or 6 educational on -going school programs such as Recycling Ranger Kindergarten program; Have a recycling truck "visit" an elementary school on career day; • Summit Hill Elementary School participated in a collection competition of plastic water bottles that won the students jackets made from recycled materials; • Plan a field trip to recycle center; ■ Make "garbage pizza." (demonstration) from materials that typically go into landfills based on the percentage of these materials are found in landfills, yard materials, metals, etc. — get suggestions on how the amount can be reduced such as mulching organic material for reuse or using house -hold trash compactors ■ Marc Arrington again raised the idea of some kind of city -sanctioned signage for residents who are attempting to incorporate "green" ideas such as rainwater collection and grey -water reuse -- "this is a community education piece," for the benefit of curious neighbors, i.e., "Milton Grows Green Grey -water reuse exhibit." • Land Use & Building Standards (LUGS) - Jon McPhail circulated an email with suggested topics and meeting dates to the subcommittee members, but received insufficient response in time to convene a meeting. There was a brief discussion about the possible overlap that might occur between different subcommittees such as part of LUBS being erosion control and thus related to Water, Air and Energy. Julie mentioned the dates for the next two CPAClcommunity `visualizing" meetings, May 29 at 6:00 p.m. and May 31, 9:00 a.m., both at Summit Hill Elementary School. Some of the MGG committee members went on to the CPAC meeting being held right after our meeting. She also asked that the minutes list possible dates and times for our next meeting and see what date/time generates the broadest response what works best for the most people. Then contact Linda Blow about reserving the executive conference room for committee or subcommittee meetings.
