Milton Grows Green Committee Minutes October 9, 2008 [APPROVED] Date: October 9, 2008, 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. Place: City of Milton Fire Station No. 43, 750 Hickory Flat Road, Milton, GA 30004 I. Agenda: The Agenda for this meeting was posted. IL Old Business[Housekeeping Items: Coordination of MGG information with the City/public: Now that we are officially recognized by the city, it is necessary to post any meeting agendas 24 hours in advance on the city web page. The city's web designer will place any information on MGG sponsored programs and the minutes on Milton's web page. There was also a discussion on how calls to MGG will be handled since there is a need to respond in a timely manner with appropriate information. For the time being correspondence for the web page and calls should go through Chris Lagerbloorn or the city manager's office. Adopt -A -Road: There was a line item in the City's budget for $6,000 for Adopt -A -Road signs. Chris was given the prototype sign and was going to have it mounted somewhere in the city for MGG members to view. He was also asked to confirm the size and availability of the metal plates for sponsors and to verify if it was 6" x 18". He was going to check with a printer on the costs related to producing the signs in various quantities. We also discussed what information and contracts any sponsors should be given, the length of the roadway and how often it would be reasonable to have it cleaned. A current draft of the contract would be sent to Chris for legal review by the city's attorneys. III. New Business: "Bring One for the Chipper," a Christmas tree recycling program, is being sponsored by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and is asking for cities to sign up. They and Keep Georgia Beautiful will provide tree seedlings in bundles of 50 trees to be handed out to people who participate. MGG wants to sponsor this recycling program for the City of Milton. It will become an annual event. In working with the city we need to identify a location, provide volunteers to man the site and find a chipper for the day. Chris Lagerbloom concurs that MGG should help organize the program for the city and also report on it with an article and pictures. The state-wide date is set for January Yd. The advantages to the city are it reduces input into the landfill and provides mulch for city facilities. The GA Dept. of Community Affairs provided an organizational plan. The most likely site for the event is Fire Station No. 43. Possible volunteer groups were identified and a few tree services which might be willing to lend their chippers for the day in exchange for Milton Grows Green Committee Minutes October 9, 2008 [Approved] ALL MILTON GRows GREEN DocUMENTS ARE PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER wTrH AT LEAST 35% POST -CONSUMER CONTENT. being identified as a co-sponsor. Efforts should be coordinated with the boy scouts who are collecting trees from individual homes as a fund raising event as well as any school related programs including sports teams that might utilize this opportunity as a fundraiser. MGG should think about placing I I" x 17" posters in Publix and Kroger advertising the event. We can get 30 laminated directional signs to put up the day of the event. A video PSA is available for schools for free. We can also schedule the Chipper Mascot for the Milton Holiday event on December 6. It was decided to ask for 500 dogwoods and 500 red cedars seedlings. Adopt -A -Stream: Tom Sewell proposed initial training events for Adapt-A-Strearn at schools other than Hopewell Middle School for November. Ideally there would be one or two people by the spring from each school who would direct the program at their school. (It's the state DNR that trains the trainers.) MGG needs to get a packet of information together that would be Milton specific to hand out to the school program leaders. Eventually each school's MGG environmental program could also include the Clean Air Campaign. Tom also asked if the City had any numbers on the Storm Drain Marking efforts. Tom will provide numbers for those placed, or to be placed, by the MGG School pilot program while others will be gathered from the Girl Scouts and others participating in the Storm Drain Marker program as a function of the annual Rivers Alive event hosted by Bailey Farm & Gardens. Recycling within the schools was also briefly discussed. Meeting adjourned at S :3 0 p.m. Next Meeting: Wednesday, October 15, 2008 6:00 p.m, Minutes APPROVED by the Governing Board this 12`h day of June 2009. 4 i Jon B.
