HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - MGG - 10-21-2008ORIGINAL Milton Milton Grows Green Committee Minutes October 21 2008 [Approved] Date: October 21, 2008, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Place: City of Milton Fire Station No. 43, 750 Hickory Flat Road, Milton, GA 30004 I. Agenda: The Agenda for this meeting was posted. II.Old Business: RRR - The letter announcing the pilot recycling program at Bell Memorial Park to parents from the Hopewell Youth Association was discussed. Jon read the current draft letter as edited by Dan Drake. Communications -- A related discussion on setting protocol for issuing press releases with this effort being coordinated with the city was also discussed. All of this information should become part of MGG's information posted on the city web site. How do we set this up? Press releases should be "sanctioned" by the city before release, but we want some control over our publicity effort. A meeting is in process of being set up to establish the appropriate steps with the city to ensure all necessary folks are engaged. Chris Lagerbloom and Allie Taylor will be a part of this meeting and determination of next steps. Jon read a list of possible press contacts including those from the last meeting and some additional points of contact: Bob Howard, Bureau Chief at AJC, bhoward&gic.com LUBS- Jon read some of the MGG committee members' responses to the CPAC questions posed to further refine the CLUP update process and documents: • Would like to see some of the large swaths of open land preserved and equestrian nature of the community preserved. Whether or not transfer development rights (TDRs) can be used to accomplish this needs closer scrutiny, as recommendations need to be specific. Would like setbacks and buffer zones preserved as written in Milton code in order to maintain visual barriers between different zoning. 0 Landfills are being used up at an accelerated pace. Chadwick has already used up 40 years of space which is why recycling is an important factor in land use. CLUP update process might want to look at options for the landfill over time including what it could be used for once it is at capacity. Also, how to buffer the landfill from the rear given it is visible from Providence Lakes and Providence Road. Adapt -A -Road - In a meeting with Dan Drake two areas that need work are: Establishing criteria for identifying and prioritizing roads for the program and where to place the signs; and • Establishing a list of roads and adopters that are already in place, seeing if they are still active and establishing requirements for the clean up, i.e., age restrictions, number of supervising adults, equipment needed, how often to clean, how is this going to be checked, where to dispose of trash, what safety rules and what documents to be downloaded from the city web site to explain and enroll in the program. • The city would have to be involved in mowing the areas identified. III. New Business: Wilson Borden talked about the "Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable" which meets the first Friday of every month, 7:30-9:00 am, at the All Saints Episcopal Church 634 West Peachtree St., Atlanta. Pod casts of the discussions can be downloaded from the Southface web site. The November 7th discussion is on "Region -wide Responses to Growth" Session I will examine some of the sizable and growing number of initiatives underway in the region to confront Atlanta's growth. Session II will look at examples of tools, resources and public, private and non-profit leadership being used in dozens of Atlanta locales. Press Kit — Julie asked that the communications subcommittee put together a press kit that would include introductory information of MGG, the Executive Summary, Mission Statement, etc. as well as separate info sheets on specific programs as they are implemented such as the Adapt -A -Road Program, Bell Memorial Park Pilot Recycling Program or the MGG School Programs. This will be helpful for the City, the communications manager, Allie Taylor, and anyone that inquires about the MGG programs. It also will serve as some of the educational material needed by certain of the sub- committees. It will ensure consistent information is available for whoever needs it.
