T his Sunday, March 22 at 6:30 at Gordon and Jim Hunt er 's house there will be an organizationa l and plannin g mee t ing. Jon , Jack, Marc and Kathy are sched ul ed to represe nt MGG. Organi zers from the Ch urch of the Latter Da y Saint s and Milton Grows Green have already spent time walkin g the site to assess the scope o f the genera l cleanup needed. Anyt hin g liv in g that wi ll be removed will be tagged ahead of tim e w ith a yellow ribbon. MGG needs to develop a comprehens ive li st befo re Sunday's meet ing. MGG w ill be organizi ng the log istics a nd J im Brown from the ch ur c h w ill be in c harge of o rganiz in g church vo lunteers and o f all volun teers on th e ground. Coordinati o n and publicity w ill be up to us . Kath y Johnson has agreed to coordinate vo lunteers from our e nd . Park s a nd Recreation is g oi ng to lo ok at th e plan afte r it is de vel oped. Adopt-A-Roa d -Roll out is tentatively scheduled for th e fi rst wee k in May. It was decided to place one sign at the beginning of th e ad opted road segment and one sign at the end. The d is tance of road to be adopted co ul d vary in increment s of a m il e wi th a I-mi le m inimum . MGG w ou ld d eterm in e what stretches o f Road ca n be ad op ted and by wh o m. T he signs wou ld be placed a fter the vol unt ee r or g rou p has clea ned th e ir ass ig ned sect ion th e fi rs t t ime . Dan Drake is ge ttin g cost esti mates for th e signs. We should also make an in struct ional safety vide o. There was a discuss ion on how to hand le State highwa ys. T here are three within Milto n, Hwy. 9, Birmin gham Hw y. a nd Hwy. 140. I was a general con se nsus that Hwy. 9 posed problems too big for a volunteer cleanup chew alone si nce it would require mowing and the removal of objects too la rge for trash bags. Gina said that GA DOT gave three alternatives for cleanup adoption: I. MGO could contract; 2. th e ci ty cou ld co nt ract; or 3. a busi ness could contract w ith GA DOT and GA DOT wo uld take r espons ibili ty for li ab ilit y. Co nsens us was that we s hould be able to leverage o ur offer to vo lu nteer to ge t th e DOT to do the mowing and pickup of large debris. We shou ld also be able to sub-o ut sec ti ons of Rt. 9 us in g what ever signs appropriate and ge t the city to step up e nforcement of a «litteri ng ban." MOO's e ffort s are meant as a supplement to state and c ity efforts. MOO ha s a say in setting the rul es and can't be re spons ibl e for all 18 mil es of Hwy. 9. Alt hough there are a lo t of peop le inte re sted in these sectio ns, lack of equipm ent co uld be an issue for large projects s uch as this. The Kits with supp li es wo uld include: g loves (to be kept by individual volunteers fo r reuse -Jack may be ab le to get a s uppl y from Kim be rl y-Clar k), o range vests. a fi rst aid kit , orange caution flags to be placed at th e begi n ning and e nd of wo rk deta il s. We need t o fig ure out how man y of these kits would we need and what should be the drop off an d pick up point for the kits . A lso we ne ed to find out i f the city p ublic works departm e nt mi ght a lready have caution signs we could bo rrow. House Keeping Issues -A preli mi nar y MOO "delegates" meeting for th e Great Ameri can Cleanup is sc hed ul ed fo r 2:00 p.m. at th e C ra ba ppl e Starb ucks on Satur day, March 14 th. Gina a nd Kathy need a few rubber stamps wit h th e MOO logo on th e m. (F ran c ia w ill lo ok into ge ttin g th is done.) This is for an Evergreen Schools co nt est w here kids put th ei r env ironmen tal messages and drawings o n br own paper ba gs for prizes . Contest deadline is sc hedu led fo r around the 5th or 6th of Ma y. MGG has a req ues t fr om CPAC and th e LUBS s ubcomm itt ee is wo rking on gettin g a co nse nsus response back to th e m. MOG needs to make a detennination as to what can be done to get points for a Green C itie s Designation for Milton. Julie has ta lked wi th Sharo n Murp hy about setting up a community garden/fram ers market. Cou ld be one of the events he ld at th e Binningham Park.
