Milton Grows Green Committee
Minutes June 11, 2009 [APPROVED]
Date: June 11, 2009, 6:00 — 7:00 p.m.
Place: City of Milton Fire Station No. 43, 750 Hickory Flat Road, Milton, GA 30004
1. Agenda: The Agenda for this meeting was posted.
II. Approval of Minutes: All outstanding minutes from prior meetings were approved.
III.Old Business and Committee Reports:
LUBS —
• CPAC — Two "Visioning" planning workshops are scheduled for Saturday July 18 at 9:00
am and at 1:00 pm at City Hall. MGG members need to get their views to CPAC and/or
attend one of these sessions.
• Green Cities Designation The requirements are posted on the Atlanta Regional
Commission web site. The City Council needs to be apprised of any required actions and
direct the City by Resolution of Council to take action where they see it appropriate. Our
committee will develop a preliminary list of criteria for points for certification. A good
subcommittee would include Melissa, Wilson, Marc and Kathi Cook. The biggest piece of
this is to identify areas where the city might pass "resolutions" on intentions such as
purchasing only hybrid cars, use only recycled paper, require all buildings over 5 stories to
meet minimum LEED standards, etc. Some of these things may already be in place.
RRR —
• Keep Milton Beautiful — Marc Arrington is working on this. He has submitted a report of
MGG projects for this year in hopes of identifying MGG as Milton's official Keep America
Beautiful designee. The requirements are based on things we've already done such as the
Great American Cleanup of Birmingham Park, the recycle program at Bell Memorial Park,
Bulky Trash Day with Roswell and Alpharetta and the Adopt -A -Road program. The city
will pay for MGG's certification. (Terri Porter, Environmental Director for Alpharetta was
mentioned as a good person to contact for information on accomplishing this since
Alpharetta is currently in the process of doing this.)
• Adopt -A -Road — It's not clear if the kick off is going to occur at the end of this month. We
need to contact Gina for an update of where we are. We also need to offer her help where
she may need it.
• Hazardous Waste Disposal Date — The question was posed as to whether or not a date for
this had been identified. No date has been set, and the mechanism for combining forces with
Roswell, Alpharetta, etc. has not been pinned down. Needs follow up.

Communications and Education -
• Jon suggested that MGG submit a 6-month report to City Council on what we've done and
what we're proposing to do in the near future.
Air Water & Energy —
Tom Sewell wants to have a meeting in August to plan MGG/School collaborative projects
such as storm drain marking. We need a new design that identifies MGG as a sponsor.
Those interested in this project will be contacted by Kathy Johnson and a date set for a
meeting.
IV. New Business:
■ Jon proposed inviting Holly Elmore, director of the Green Foodservice Alliance (GFA) and
a founding partner of "Zero Waste Zone." to talk at a meeting at City Hall to familiarize all
interested in the "Zero Waste Zone" concept. Jim Lindenmayer, Terri Porter, environmental
Education Coordinator for Alpharetta and Janet Leiberman would also be invited as well as
lead restaurant owners/managers. This could be scheduled between 1-3 pm mid week.
■ Slow Food Movement advocates for locally grown food and local farmers markets. It started
at "white table" restaurants such as those that led to the founding of Serenbe. Farm -fresh
organic ingredients grown locally mean food is fresher, less energy is used to get food to
market because of shorter transportation distances, it supports local farmers and acts as an
incentive to keep farm land undeveloped. This needs to be encouraged as part of Milton's
future. We should pass this concept on to CPAC.
• Gina knows about organic farming as she has one.
• There are local farmer's markets Saturday morning in Alpharetta and at Crabapple.
Meeting adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
Minutes APPROVED by the Governing Board this 12`' day of July 2009.
