Community Habitat Meeting)
Place: Executive Conference Room, Milton City Hall, 13000 Deerfield Parkway, Milton, GA 30004
Attendees: Jack Lindon, Francia Lindon, Kathy Johnson, Donna Liberatore and Lynna Lee.
I. Agenda: It was posted on the City's web site.
II. Approval ofMinutes: No minutes were approved.
III. Old Business & Updates:
• Rivers Alive -Jack -it was a very successful event. There was a Herald newspaper article
about the event. Around 60 people participated. Groups were mainly from the high schools,
Milton French National Honor Society, Cambridge HS Environmental Club and the
Hopewell Middle School.
• Water Issues in Milton -Jon initiated a discussion, not on the Agenda, on wastewater and
water supply in Milton as they relate to Fulton County's ongoing attempts to increase sewer
capacities at its facilities at Big Creek and on the north side. These efforts are subject to a
directive from the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District, one of 11 statewide
agencies that do long-range planning and have jurisdiction over counties. There is a
prediction that Fulton County is going to face huge expenses and disruptions in changing out
its combined storm water runoff overflows so that sewage doesn't backup into the
wastewater treatment system when it rains hard. Jon feels that since we are in the Coosa River
basin, we should be dealing with the people in Cherokee County. He is going to send a report
to Jack that is more specific regarding water planning issues and what is taking place in
Fulton County.
• Green Communities Update -Cindy-we have earned the Bronze level and will be
recognized Dec. 5 at the ARC.
• Solid Waste Ordinance -Cindy -(added to minutes) changes have been made to ordinance to
provide for late payment charges, a decal that will be issued after annual payments and
tonnage reports are up to date, to clarify some wording and to use infrastructure
maintenance fees to fund Household Hazardous Waste events. Seeking approval at Dec. 3
meeting.
• Clean Air Pace Award -Cindy (added to minutes) -the City received a Local Government
Champion award at a presentation on Nov. 3 for our efforts in promoting dean commute
options in the city.
• Adopt-a-Road -Cindy (added to minutes) -Milton Interact Club is adopting Providence Rd.,
and BUMC conSidering Birmingham Rd. State DOT has their Adopt-a-Road program on
hold pending some changes.
• Environmental Education -Cindy (added to minutes) -We are initiating a grant program
(grants of about $250 for EE) for the schools that have signed on for Evergreen School
program.

IV. New Business:
• Earth Day, April 20, 2013. Kathy -For planning purpose we need to make a decision on
whether or not to charge for food. Kathy Johnson suggested we charge for food because
vendors will have incentive to show up and bring enough food. Offering free food proved
to be a problem last year. We didn't have enough and wound up scrambling for pizza at the
last minute. As an example, Milton's hasn't shown up for 2 out of 3 times. We need to be
able to count on vendors who have given us a commitment. Jack's plan is to go to
restaurants and ask them which way they'd prefer, free or for a charge. Francia commented
whatever decision is made has to be applied uniformly to all food vendors. If the decision is
made for free food, Jack suggested giving people vouchers as they enter so we don't get
cleaned out early in the day. Donna suggested that paying for food is not a problem for
people and it is done at the Roundup. Francia suggested we do food trucks like Crabapple
Antique festival. Jack believes it's up to the vendors ...what do they want to do? Donna
suggested listing vendors on ads. Next meeting we need to assign tasks: assigning overall
chairperson, logistics, getting food and environmental vendors, and entertainment.
• Bring One for the Chipper Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 -Jack -Need to start organizing.
Volunteers from Young Men's Service League have signed up -they are so great! Check
with Boy Scout troop 841 on tree pickup. Check with Milton HS for permission and location;
check with Alpharetta Rotary (Wayne Robinson) on whether they will offer seedlings again
or if Mark Law has any sources. Check with other locations, Scottsdale Farms -will be an
early collection site and Home Depot on Windward, which has been run by City of
Alpharetta so we won't need to send volunteers there. We'll have a new flyer but need to do
more publicity in local papers and other media.
• Household Hazardous Waste collection event -Jack The City has funded $12,000 for HHW
collection. Need to plan a date for late Feb. or early March. Jon asked if we are able to
involve companies like Waste Management? Jack said we should involve WM and Verizon,
Home Depot-as a partner and for a location. Might help to partner with Alpharetta to share
fixed costs. Environmental Quality is company we have spoken with that does remediation
of hazardous waste. We will collect paint too. Atlanta Paint Recycling might handle the
paint. According to EQ you should be able to handle @200 cars with $12,000 budget. Need
to set up a pre-registration system to estimate quantity so you don't go over budget.
Potential dates Feb. 23, March 2. Cindy will check with city on dates and location. Jack said
EQ said they were available either of those dates.
V. OTHER NOTICES:
• We need an updated MGG member list and a new picture of the group!
• Next MGG meeting-Dec. 12. 6:30 PM-8:00 PM Executive Conference Room. Let's bring an
"eco-friendly wrapped gift" (no more than $10) for a gift exchange and the city will provide
some holiday refreshments and make this a celebration of all our accomplishments for the
year!
