HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - MGG - 02-13-2013[J ORIGINAL MILTON GROWS GREEN COMMITTEE FEBRUARY 13, 2013 MINUTES [ApPROVED] Date: February 13,2013,6:30 to 8:00 PM Place: Fire Station 43, 750 Hickory Flat Road, Milton, GA 30004 Agenda: It was posted on the City's web site. Attendees: Jack Lindon, Cindy Eade, Francia Lindon, Jon McPhail, Lynna Lee, Bruce Langston, Will Check and Teresa Stickels. I. Approval of Minutes: -Francia -no minutes were available. II. Guest Presentation: Michael Iamele (Milton resident) and Nick Poe -Metrotech, a company that gives real-time traffic information from any video camera to both local governments and non-government organizations via smart phones. Matt Kunz recommended MGG meet Michael and see if there was an opportunity for a partnership. Do it intersection by intersection, on internal city roads. They count the cars, measure the speed and regulate the traffic flow by changing the signal timing. Count is 90% accurate . What's the quickest way to get from point A to point B. They can tell where congestion areas exist. Cloud based system that also records and saves data for the historical record identifying heavily trafficked areas. Can ultimately mitigate bad traffic problems through signaling, advanced management. Saves commute times, gas and greenhouse gases. Would like to find a way to work with Milton. Want to have mass arms at the intersections to mount the cameras. Up to us who travel around Milton to identify bad intersections and point these out to the City as locations for mass arms and cameras. Currently looking to do a pilot with Alpharetta funded by North Fulton CIDs for $25,000 with trial signals along Windward, both sides of Rt. 400, Web Bridge Road and Old Milton Pkwy. We exist to create a more ubiquitous place where all data can be funneled. Talked about an IGA between Milton and Alpharetta. Metrotech got a letter of recommendation from the Clean Air Campaign. Jack suggested they be put in touch with people from Community Development. III. New Business: • Household Hazardous Waste Event -Jack stated that due to the quotation/ contract process, we would have to postpone the event until May. Cindy said that Cambridge HS is interested in hosting, but needs more information. We might consider rebranding it to Household Paint and Chemical Collection. Cindy will work on the RFP process. Choice of going with Atlanta Paint recycling-which does recycle the paint. Other providers do not recycle the pain. It is dried and landfilled. Much less expensive to landfill then recycle it. Lynna asked if we could offset the costs by charging $1/ can so that it can be recycled. Cindy said it gets complicated with collecting money. If we can collect money, the consensus was to go with the Atlanta Paint Recycling. Bell Memorial has a couple of open weekends to host the collection. • Earth Day -Teresa Stickels reports we have sponsor / vendor forms. Jack reports that we got $1500 from Children's Healthcare and $1000 from Walmart, plus the City's contribution of $3200. Jack said the decision to move Earth Day to Friendship Park was made by the Earth Day Committee, not opened up to everyone. Jon McPhail expressed his opinion about Birmingham Park being a Milton Grows Green Committee Meeting Minutes , February 13, 2013 [APPROVED] ALL MIl.TON GROWS GREE N DOCUMENfS ARE PRlNTED ON RECYCLED PAPER WITH AT LEAST 35 % POST-CONSUMER CONTENT. better location. We discussed the pros and cons about Friendship Park. Teresa said the planning committee agreed to try this location with the thought we would reconsider the location after this year's event on whether or not to move back. Jon kept pushing to try and change it back to Birmingham Park and asked for a vote. A vote was taken and majority agreed to keep it at Friendship. Lynna said she has been contacting schools for their involvement, and Mill Springs E.5. said they will bring their bee keeping program. • Environmental Education -Lynna is working on the recycling program at Cambridge, and helping to organize the environmental club. The City's $250 grant will help get that program going. IV. Old Business: • NWF Milton Wildlife Habitat Community Certification Project -Will Check said "good-by." He's going to TN State in the fall. NWF wants to have a booth at Earth Day. We need volunteers to plan what booth will have and man it on the festival day. Need someone to replace Will to take over leadership of the committee, which has been in limbo the last few months. Joan Borzillei's name came up as someone who has been good at reaching out in the past. Will wants to return for the certification ceremony. • Keep Milton Beautiful/KGB Affiliation Jack explained that the City council passed a resolution to recognize MGG as the Keep Milton Beautiful Affiliate. However, Keep Georgia Beautiful claims that Keep North Fulton Beautiful would have to relinquish Milton since it was technically part of their territory. So far KNFB has refused to do this. Jack said, in a conversation with Chris at City Hall, he suggested, why don't we just go ahead and fill out an application to be an affiliate, pay the $3,000 fee to fund the training. At least 6 members of MGG would have to commit to the training. KGB as a part of GA Dept. of Community Affairs, are now down to 2 people from about 11 after a recent reorganization. MGG is already doing a number of things that KGB promotes. There was a discussion on the pros and cons of joining. Francia talked about her concern with the Koch Brothers and Georgia Pacific's (two of the biggest national polluters) involvement with the KGB's Foundation. Bruce called it "green washing." There was concern and a discussion about wanting to keep Milton Grows Green as part of the name. When he first looked into it, Jon was told we could keep our logo and name. Cindy explained that the branding would need to be changed to Keep Milton Beautiful. Jack recommended "Milton Grows Green doing business as a Keep Georgia Beautiful Affiliate." Being a part of KGB would give us access to grants although the funding has been more limited in this economy. KGB requires specific documentation, which can be done online such as tonnage on litter collected and volunteer hours. Cindy recommended that we take the next month to review the application and the necessary commitment to being on the KMB organizing committee. The motion was to move forward on the application process and to take a vote of the committee after reviewing the application. This is a big deal. Everybody on the committee should know the details, take the next month to review the application and decide at the next meeting. Put it on the Agenda for the next meeting for a vote. It's agreed there are details to be determined on the size of board and structure moving forward. Meeting adjourne at 8:30 PM ATTEST~'~~~~ Francia Lindon, Secretary Milton Grows Green Committee Meeting Minutes, February 13, 2013 [ApPROVED]
