Grand opening Nov. 11, Veterans' Day. • Earth Day: Angela Thompson introduced herself as responsible for special events and project management for the City. It will be considered a City special spring event. As such the City will be taking more ownership of the event. She said Cindy wanted her to have more of a role, so she will be spearheading it including budgeting, marketing, advertising, press releases, t shirts and logos, things the City usually handles for events. She will need help getting sponsors and vendors. Budget will be the same as last year. We can spend what we raise. Cindy will be involved more as a committee member. Angela and Cindy decided on the date of April 19 th • Discussion followed about other competing events in the area and the Easter date. The City wants it held at Friendship Park but there was some discussion about keeping it there. Angela said people don't like change. If event grows in the future, it may outgrow the park. Jack said he got some negative comments about the venue particularly from the Boy Scouts. Some past green sponsors who were involved, when it was held at Birmingham, said they were not pleased with the change, seeing Friendship as being too commercial. They would not sponsor it if held at Friendship. Angela asked who on the MGG committee wanted to be involved in planning the event. Kathy volunteered to help with the kids' tent. Jack will do logistics. Jon will work on getting vendors and sponsors. Francia asked to be involved with all the things she has done in the past -graphics, the logo, signs and the t-shirt design. Angela showed a new Earth Day logo she and Jason had worked on saying the City wanted it to be more inline with its branding and interesting to kids. She hoped it would be a welcomed change, something new to work with. Francia pointed out that it was quite different from the one used for the past 4 events and the established branding recognition would be lost. Angela said the City wanted all the events in line with City branding and marketing, the same way other city events are handled. "We don't elect committee members to take care of things the City handles. Jason and I are professional graphic designers on top of everything else we do." There was a mixed reaction to the new logo design. Discussion followed about the event being MGG's signature event and a celebration of Nature. That's one of the reasons Birmingham Park is so attractive. It's full of nature. There's not a whole lot of nature at Friendship, less so over time. It's in a pretty commercial area. Earth Day is meant to focus on the less business-related aspects of Milton. This goes to the "new" logo. It's not a bad logo but it might speak better to a different event. It doesn't speak to being about Nature. In the past whatever we've done graphically, we've taken to the City and had them signoff with their approval. Angela insisted again, the City was going to be in charge of the branding. And said that the concerns raised would be taken up with the planning committee. A meeting date was set for the planning committee for December 10th at noon. • Bell Memorial Park: Jim Cregge showed a revised plan City was voting on. Reported the addition of 32 acres of land, trying to preserve green space in corner and mature trees, reflects change from original plan. He went over the plan explaining the details - 2 synthetic turf rectangular fields, 4 or 5 ball fields depending on the season and alternating with soccer and a possible swing field from the rectangular. Every study for the City says this isn't enough. Will use pervious pavers in parking lot. A traffic study is being done to figure out what to do with the Thompson / Francis / Hopewell crossroads. • Providence Park: Jim reported on contamination found in Providence Park -it contained no heavy metals. It consisted of cleaning solvents, turpentine, paint, etc. that had leached down to bedrock. Fulton County dug out 1,000 yards of dirt. In March all the wells were tested again and found to be clean. The GA EPD wants to see another 2 years of continued monitoring and clean results, before it will sign off that the park is safe and Milton can continue with the purchase process to gain ownership from Fulton County. N. New Business • Jon brought in recent photos pictures showing runoff and erosion in the Blue Valley subdivision. Water is rising again. There's about 2-1/2 to 3 acres of mud. Deer prints showed they were up to their knees. Somebody's not following code. Jack suggested he or Jon report it to community development for code enforcement attention. Cindy told Jon to send his photos of the violation to Kathy Field. • Margaret Lamb is putting on storm drain markers in White Columns for Rivers Alive project. • Gail Gill reported "Chasing Ice" movie is Oct. 21 at GA Tech if anyone is interested in attending. • Oct. 23 is our Adopt-A-Stream training with Sharon Smith from Fulton County, Dept. of Water Resources presenting a certification class.
