HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - MGG - 11-13-2013M MILTON GROWS GREEN COMMITTEE ORIGINAL NOVEMBER 13, 2013 MINUTES [APPROVED] Date: November 13, 2013, 6:30 to 7:30 PM Place: Fire Station #43, 750 Hickory Flat Road, Milton, GA Attendees: Cindy Eade, Lynna Lee, Bruce Langston, Teresa Stickels, Joe Lamp'l, Kathy Johnson, Margaret Lamb, Gail Gill, Teresa Stickels, Francia Lindon, Jack Lindon, Julie Pinckney and Jason Wright. L Agenda: It was posted on the City's web site. 11. Approval of Minutes: No minutes were approved. III. New Business (taken out of the order on the Agenda): • Cindy talked about the Arnold Road visioning session held Tuesday. She encouraged us to go on the city's web site to look at the plan and offer suggestions. ARC planners helping. People do not want a continuation of the hodge-podge of commercial and residential development. Want to preserve some of the rural view shed with setbacks with mix use development, office, commercial and residential. Chadwick landfill use possibilities brought up, passive park possibility, nature trail, etc. • Guest Presentation - To start the dialogue on how we want to look going forward, Jason presented 3 of his draft sketches for MGG's updated logo to better comply with the city's new branding efforts. The city's new font is Trajan with a black silhouette horse image on the right end. Want city brand to be mutable for city's different groups and identify core audiences - bringing ideas you think would appeal to them. 0 V design evocative of governmental organization, higher calling, has state tree live oak, Trajan font and bars. More masculine. Suggests "higher calling." 0 2"d is for core audience of youth, reminiscent of North Face logo. Off kilter lettering, would work well on T-shirts. Uses subsidiary font Century Gothic. 0 3"a says "North Fulton Mother" in the graphic - using more feminine decoration. Trying to define how we see ourselves. Horse defines relation to nature. As an official chartered city group MGG should be in line with city branding in everything we do. Examples are Better Together and MDAC, tie into city branding with use of font. Wants process to be collaborative as it was with City council. Showed the City's new logo. MGG, as an official sanctioned city committee, everything we do, branding and everything else should correspond to city branding. Jack said it took months and numerous drafts for committee to arrive at current design. Logo can be a little bit aspirational. Comments: Liked minimalism of V logo; thought logo should say something about what you do rather then who you are. Liked tree but not black tree. Horse says "Milton equestrian, domesticated animal" doesn't say "nature." Kathy liked the green horse on 2"d. Wants something that says we are an environmental group. Francia passed out a draft logo that kept the "green path" of the old logo but had the new horse (in reverse from the city logo) and Trojan font. Tried to keep logo identifiable with MGG old logo. Cindy liked the youth group appeal. Barbara wanted people to see us for who we are (not a youth group) - wanted logo to show people all the things we're doing, who we are, identify us with city. Joe suggested recycle arrows because it's instantly recognizable, circular motion tying things together. We don't have to have a horse but please use Trajan if you eliminate it. Liked horse integrated into lettering of 3`d design. Joe liked 2"d for energy and contemporary feeling, connection to millennials - green horse, circular lines can be translated to earth. Horse in circle could be used as a "stamp" recognizable in small spaces. Several liked this idea. Don't want to be too literal, want simplicity. Mac "apple" and Nike "swoosh" convey Newton's apple and motion, concepts, rather then what the companies do. Milton Grows Green Committee Meeting Minutes November 13, 2013 [APPROVED] ALL lE'lILTON GROWS GREEN DOCUMENT'S ARE PRIN-MD ON RECYCLED PAPER WnH AT LEAST 35% POsT - coNsuMER CONTENT. Everybody commit to getting comments back to Jason in a week. Jason wanted base line to go forward and collaborate. Nobody liked 3`d design. People liked 2"d best of Jason's 3. Kathy liked green horse. Lynna didn't like slanted lettering. Liked "grunge" font. Jason likes "earth" that Francia does. Just do green planets. Would like to see earth in "O" in "Grows," not in "Milton." Has to read well in Black and White too. Mix of opinions on green splotches. Work on a couple different concepts of 2"d design. Jack wants to finish this in a month. Suggested that over the next week both Jason and Francia come up with a few more designs and send to committee. Committee comes back with comments in the following week. Cindy could do a survey monkey so we could post comments on different ideas. Another week to make more designs based on comments and then narrow choices down. Francia passed out initial draft designs for Earth Day. This design is mutually exclusive from City Logo. We need to get going on sponsors and launch in early January. Send back comments. Cindy said meeting with Jason and Angela went well - we're all on same page. We're going to collaborate on all decisions. III. Announcements: • House Chemical Waste and Paint Collection - Held in February before Bell Memorial closes for renovations. Check with Laura Cedarquest's husband for technical help from Boy Scouts with e-data manipulation. • Bring One for the Chipper - Date January 4"', Saturday, two locations Milton HS and Scottsdale Farms. At least 70 to 75 volunteers came. Not that many from Milton this year. Jr. Beta and Alpharetta HS came through_ • Adopt -a -Stream - Had good training session. Cindy to check on getting us our certificates and concern about getting out in field to use it before we lose it. Jack talked to teacher at Crabapple Crossing and that may be our entry into the school system. Kathy thinks that 5' graders can do it with a lot of supervision. Dissolved Oxygen is a little complex. Would prefer doing it with middle and high school students. Teresa wants to schedule another training session. • Evergreen Schools - Doing grant proposals again for up to $500. Will offer suggestions for projects. Waste Pro has given off recycling at schools to another smaller company. • Adopt -A -Road - form on web site needs to be updated and Julie P. working on that.
