HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - MGG - 04-10-2014o 0 IGINAL MILTON GROWS GREEN COMMITTEE APRIL 10, 2014 MINUTES [ApPROVED] Date: April 10, 2014, 6:30 -8:00 PM Place: Executive Conference Room, Milton City Hall, 13000 Deerfield Parkway, Milton GA 30004 Attendees: Jack Lindon, Francia Lindon, Cindy Eade, Todd Harkelroad, Bruce Langston, Lynna Lee, Teresa Stickels, Barbara Peck, Gail Gill and Marc Mazur. 1. Agenda: It was posted on the City's web site. 11. Minutes: No minutes were approved. III. Updates and Old Business: • Introductions: Marc Mazur is a new resident of Milton from Sandy Springs, works for UPS and UPS encourages people to get involved in the community. Marc is interested in water related initiatives, Adopt-A-Stream and Rivers Alive. • Preserve Rural Milton: Cindy gave an update on the Preserve Rural Milton initiative. Said right now PRM is Abby Laboda, Laura Rencher and Laurel Florio. They are researching Conservation Subdivisions, Transfer Development Rights, land trusts and other incentives for developers to reduce density. They are also pushing the City to develop and adopt a "GreenPrint" overlay map. Todd commented there have been 900 home starts this year so the need is urgent. • Earth Da Festival: Teresa, Chairman of Earth Day, updated the committee on some activities: Egg hunt at 11:30, Raptors from Chattahoochee Nature Center, a dog rescue group, Canine Assistance, hamster balls, lots of food. Friendship Park brush cleanup will take place Saturday April 12 at 9 AM. MGG will have booth that includes Arbor Day, National Wildlife Federation display, Arbor Day tree planting activity and Adopt-A­ Stream signup. Six banners are up around town. Suggestion was made for a sign by city hall. • Adopt-A-Stream (GA Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Program): On March 8th a group of MGG volunteers and family members took both the classroom and field training necessary to participate in the monitoring program. The field training was done at the pond at Birmingham Park. Sharon Smith from the Fulton County Dept. of Water Services Division, conducted the training. MGG will try to schedule another A-A-S training this summer. We are trying to find an EverGreen School that will Adopt-A-Stream. • BSA Troo 3000 Re din Event: Jack reported that BSA's event was successful. They'd like to have it twice a year and include latex paint recycling. EcoFlo Corp, Hazardous Waste Management, could be the paint vendor. This is the same company used by the City in February. Collected material was put on pallets and stretch wrapped to be taken to recycle centers or processed by the company. The cost is 2 cents per pound. The BSA, using it as a fund-raiser, could charge $2/ can for collection. Cambridge HS applied for $500 -Cyndie Mattie, from the environmental club, would like to increase recycling at school and Birmingham Falls ES applied for $500 to implement an Adopt-A-Stream Program. Lynna will work with Cindy to try and figure out how better to interact with schools and get more participation. • Bulky Trash and Recycling: Cindy reported the March event had the best turnout ever. One hundred sixty Milton residents participated. Next event is June 7th • Todd will forward information to his HOA for their distribution list. • Ado t-A-Road: No report. • MGG Structure Reo anization: Jack reported that a subcommittee is working on changes and are considering a seven-member board. New MGG structure may be Past Chairman for 1-year term, Current Chairman, 1-year term, Vice Chairman (Chairman Elect) 1-year term and Directors 1-year term. One Director for each of the Subcommittees: Water, Air and Energy, Communications and Certifications, Education and Community Outreach and Land Use and Building Standards. Structure Reorganization Subcommittee will continue to work on it and come back at the June meeting with more detail. Resolution establishing MGG will also need to be changed. IV. New Business Se tic S stem Communi Education: Cindy introduced a program sponsored by UGA called OeanScapes that helps with septic system education for homeowners. MGG expressed interest in coordinating that as a community meeting possibly in Aug/Sept. Meeting Adjourned at 7:50 PM ATIEST, ~,,~~ /" Francza.
