HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - MGG - 02-11-2015Milton Grows Green (MGG) Meeting Executive Conference Room, Milton City Hall February 11, 2015 In attendance: Chris Lagerbloom, Jack Lindon, Jennifer Griffiths, Kathy Johnson, Barbara Peck, Margaret Lamb, and Teresa Stickels 1. Introductions were made around the table. 2. There was a short discussion on the history and background of MGG, presented by Jack Lindon. 3. There was a discussion of the needs of the City with regard to both conservation/land preservation and MGG activities. At the February 9th City Council work session, the council indicated that the issue of land conservation was important enough to perhaps warrant a full-time staff person. Several scenarios for meeting these needs were discussed. One scenario involves a full-time conservation planner (new position) who spends most of their time handing conservation issues for the City and a small portion of time supporting MGG activities. A second scenario involves a full-time conservation planner (new position) and a part-time Sustainability Coordinator (filling a currently open position). In this scenario, MGG activities would be supported by the Sustainability Coordinator. The group felt that the skill sets required by the City and MGG were diverse and would not likely be found in one person. Chris Lagerbloom suggested the situation might require a centralized coordinator who directs traffic inside City Hall, as well as a true conservation person. 4. The group went through a list of current MGG programs and projects as well as Community education and support programs and designated contacts from MGG and the City for each. There was a discussion of the future direction for MGG and how it has quite naturally been shifting back to advising on policy (which was a responsibility of the group when it was founded by the City Council). This has occurred as more and more programs and projects of MGG have become self-sustaining and since the improvement of the economy has led to more development. The group discussed the fact that if the full-time conservation planner is hired, that person would interact with MGG in the areas of policy and advocacy that relate to MGG. The group also discussed the need to continue community education. Chris Lagerbloom updated the board on the status of Birmingham Park. The City of Milton owns approx. 155 acres; the Fulton County Facilities Corporation owns approx. 54. That 54 acre parcel is scheduled to be transferred to the City of Milton in 2019. MGG has committed to making the rejuvenation of Birmingham Park a priority. This will include events at the park like clean-up days, picnics, and trail hikes.
