My wife and I started the Milton Athletic Club last year. Our mission is to serve this community through fitness, nutrition, and true camaraderie in order to change lives. And please know that changing lives is exactly what we are doing. We are not your average fitness place. We are family (and veteran) owned and operated. We are simply a small business trying to do great things for our community. But doing so is not easy and we are not without our unique set of challenges. Our biggest challenge is member growth because much of our community doesn’t realize that we exist. This is because we moved into our space without a sign. Our expectation was that the landlord would provide us with signage space on the existing sign (see Exhibit 1). We are the largest tenant (besides Publix) in the Birmingham Crossroads Shopping Center so we were baffled that nearly everyone has a sign but us. But the landlord is foreign, and practically absent; and, unfortunately, the signage never happened. So, being a Veteran Army Officer, I did what all good paratroopers do in combat…I improvised and made my own sign. It was either that or go bankrupt, thus my decision at the time was easy. But, subsequently, a Milton Code Enforcement Officer made it known to me that I had to have a sign permit. Thus, I make this petition. Without that sign people simply don’t know we are here because we are tucked into the back corner of the parking lot and visually blocked by various trees (see Exhibit 2). Whereas several other businesses in this complex have road-front buildings and signage on their buildings (see Exhibit 3) our space sits on the bottom level below the road; thus our space cannot be seen from the roadway. We literally have no other viable signage options. Yet, since that sign has been up our foot traffic has nearly quadrupled. Unfortunately, without the sign we will not survive and that will affect not just my family, but our 13-member team, and all 160 of our current members. We are the fourth gym in this space in under 10 years. That’s because it is not an easy place to grow and maintain, especially without proper signage. I beseech the BZA to support this small, family and veteran owned business by allowing us to keep our one sign. Thank you for your time and consideration.
