This year a special ceremony was held at Milton High School honoring Corporal Harry Vaughan, a 1967 MHS graduate, who was killed in Vietnam on March 7, 1968. Corporal Vaughan’s family and fellow soldiers who served with him in Vietnam attended the event. A very impressive monument honoring Corporal Vaughan was unveiled. It will be permanently located at City Hall when completed.  Memorial Day Ceremony – May 26 This year the Annual Milton Memorial Day service was held at the new Freedom Park, located on the corner of Deerfield Parkway and Webb Road. Some 600 people attended the event. The Reverend Robert G. Certain was the special guest speaker. Rev. Certain was a close friend of President Ford and led the memorial services and presided at his burial in Michigan. A roll call of veterans (383 names) who have died in US 2 military conflicts beginning with the Revolutionary War was read during ceremony.  New Milton Library Groundbreaking – May 29 It was reported that the groundbreaking for the new Milton Library was held on May 29. Officials from the City of Milton, several Fulton County Commissioners and representatives from the Atlanta-Fulton County Library Foundation were present. It is contemplated that construction will take approximately one year.  Power of Peace Project Meeting – Six-Week Project All were reminded about the Power of Peace Project which is expected to begin in mid-June in North Fulton. This course, led by inspirational speaker Kit Cummings, is geared for teens who might need a bit of guidance as they approach adulthood. Status of Shirts and Name Tags for Better Together Group Wayne reported that shirts will be ordered for the Better Together group. They will be black, polo-type shirts and will have the Better Together logo embroidered on the left side. These shirts normally cost approximately $65.00 retail; however, the cost to our group will be $25.00 per shirt. Events and Activities (Future) –  Crabapple Community Association – July 4 Parade The group discussed the possibility of participating in the 4th of July Parade in Crabapple. Wayne is to coordinate with Nancilee with respect to completing the necessary application. All of the Better Together members, their family and their dogs will be encouraged to participate. The Better Together shirts should be ready by the time of the parade.  Better Together Meeting on July 14 – Nancilee’s Home Nancilee encouraged all to plan to attend Better Togther’s July 14 meeting which will be held at her home. This will be a potluck dinner affair. The main course will be barbeque, which will be provided. Connecting Residents with Businesses –  Robeks Juice – Event Scheduled for June 20 – 4 to 7 PM It was reported that preparations are well underway for Better Together’s second event in its “connecting residents with Milton’s businesses” initiative. Gift cards and other freebies will be given to the 3 first 50 who attend. A release advertising the event will be sent to the 3,800 individuals on the City’s mailing list.  Other Business Possibilities Preliminary discussions have been held with CJ’s Talk of the Town, a clothing and gift shop in the Target shopping center, with respect to a possible event in the future. Open Discussion Ansley reported that plans are to hold one summer event for the Communiteen group. Hopefully, this event will take place on either August 2 or 9 at the Bethwell Community Center.
