A number of projects have already been identified that are scheduled to take place. Examples include projects at the Drake House, the senior centers, The Lionheart School and the YMCA. Wayne will be talking with Canine Assistants in order to identify a possible project that can be completed for that organization on October 18.  Crabapple Fest – October 4 – Volunteer Opportunities Several Better Together members are already volunteering to help with this year’s Crabapple Fest scheduled for Saturday, October 4. Volunteers are needed to help on Friday evening and on the day of the event.  Adopt-A-Road Clean-Up – October 25 at 9 am 2 It was reported that Better Together will be having its quarterly adopt-a- road clean-up on Saturday, October 25. Barbara Peck is coordinating this effort.  An Evening with Fulton County Commissioner-Elect Bob Ellis – November 6 at City Hall Chambers at 7 pm Commissioner-Elect Bob Ellis will be speaking to the community on Thursday, November 6. Advertising for this important offering will begin with the October City of Milton newsletter.  North Fulton Community Charities – Family Sponsorship (Christmas) Teri Harrison is making arrangements through North Fulton Community Charities to sponsor a family for Christmas. We have flexibility regarding the size of the family that we will be sponsoring. In that regard, Teri has requested that we sponsor a family with no more than two children. We will be collecting contributions from our members to cover the funds needed for purchases. Connecting Residents with Businesses –  Rainbeau Orchids – o Scheduled for Saturday, September 27 - 10 am to 1 pm o Current Status Plans are in place to have a successful event at Rainbeau Orchids on Saturday, September 27. The event has been advertised through the City’s email list and through the facebook sites of the City and Better Together. In addition, several volunteers from Better Together have volunteered to help at the event.  CJ’s Talk of the Town o Scheduled for Saturday, October 18 – 2 pm to 5 pm o Current Status Plans continue to be finalized for this event at CJ’s Talk of the Town to take place on Saturday, October 18. CJ’s is a women’s boutique located in the Target Shopping Center on Highway 9. Jewelry and original art items are also offered for sale at the business. Welcoming New Residents Initiative – September Mailings It was reported that Alexandra Givens has been helping to assemble the mailing packages for Better Together’s monthly mailings to new residents. 3 It is anticipated that approximately 60 new families will receive a welcoming letter from the Mayor, together with a Newcomer’s Guide during the month of September. Open Discussion Milton High School PTSA – Omie reported on the annual membership drive for the Milton High School PTSA. Omie encouraged Better Together members and others to join the organization. Forms to join were distributed at the meeting. Previously, this information was sent to all Better Together members. Communiteen – At the last Better Together meeting, we discussed the need for new leadership for this group since the co-founders have graduated and are now in college. In that regard, Maddy met with Ms. Naterman at Milton High School in order to determine if there might be a student interested in taking a lead role in the organization. At the present time, no one has come forward to lead the group. Better Together is committed to support the group at such time as new leadership comes forward. Better Together Christmas Event – Better Together’s one meeting in December will be on Monday, December 8. As was the case last year, plans are to have a social event where we will eat, have fun and celebrate the holidays. Wayne and Nancilee agreed to coordinate. Kimberly Brock – Georgia Author of the Year 2013 Milton resident Kimberly Brock, was our special guest. In addition to telling the group about her family (husband and three kids), she spoke about her work as an author. Her first book, The River Witch, was published in 2012. As a result of this book, Kimberly received the Georgia Author of the Year 2013. Kimberly informed the group that she will be offering classes to the public at a facility in Alpharetta (Church Street Cottage) beginning in early October. 4 Finally, Kimberly spoke of her plans to offer a free two-hour writer’s workshop to Milton-area residents at a date to be determined.
