Plans are to host five or six of these business connection events in 2015. Welcoming New Residents – Information on Volunteer Opportunities For over a year, Better Together has been sending monthly mailings to those who purchase homes within the City of Milton. Currently, the package includes a letter from the mayor, together with the Milton Newcomer’s Guide. In the future, we will be including a card which describes the three citizen volunteer committees (Better Together, Milton Grows Green and the Milton Disability Awareness Committee) so that new residents may contact these committees directly if they would like additional information. Special Needs Certified – New Program for City It was reported that representatives from the City have met with Lindsey Turner, President and Founder of Special Needs Certified (SNC). This 3 organization has been formed for the specific purpose of helping businesses and other entities better understand how to treat those with special needs. A number of businesses have already been designated as “Special Needs Certified.” In short, this means that their employees have been through the training offered by SNC. The City of Milton will be the first city to receive this designation. Plans are for all City of Milton employees, except for police and fire which both have separate, more extensive training, to complete the training within the next week. This program is being sponsored through our Better Together group. Open Discussion Special Guest – Sgt. Jason Griffin, Milton Police Sgt. Griffin gave a very interesting presentation on the daily activities of the police in Milton. He stated that Milton has 39 sworn police officers responsible for covering some 40 square miles within the city. While, all things considered, Milton is a very safe city, it does have a range of crimes, including break-ins, drug activities and traffic violations. In addition, Officer Grey, Milton’s K-9 officer, spoke about the canine unit and its activities. Also, he treated the group by bringing in Kyro, Milton’s police dog. Next Meeting – February 23 – Hickory Flat Fire Station No. 43 Wayne reminded the group that the next meeting would be held at the Hickory Road Fire Station where we will hear from representatives from the Milton Fire Department.
