HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - BT - 08-08-2016 BETTER TOGETHER Action Agenda August 8, 2016 Updates from the Meeting are Posted in Red Meeting Attendees – Welcome to Members and Guests Wayne Boston Pat Miller Lisa Ethridge Michelle Miralles Debra Jones Richard Owens Sharon Lockwood Diane Stewart Eveline Matthaeus Jason Trainer Marisa Meisters Leslie Watson Bob Meyers Cailen Wells Events and Activities –  Milton Literary Group - o Group for all writers, aspiring writers and readers o Meets on second Sunday of each month at Milton Library Reported that recent meetings of the Milton Literary Group continue to focus on planning for the 2016 literary festival.  Milton Literary Festival – o November 11 and 12, 2016 o Current Status Planning is well underway for the festival; the venue is set, the authors and poets have been confirmed; and the various panels, sessions and other activities are being finalized. In addition, there is a very active website that is continuously being updated. Adopt-a-Road Clean-up on July 23 2 Reported that eight of our Better Together members participated in the Thompson road clean-up. Our Better Together group is committed to clean up its portion of this road quarterly. Business Connection Events in 2016 –  Countryside Pet Estates – April 30  Two additional events in 2016 It was reported that Better Together sponsored one business connection event in early 2016 at Countryside Pet Estates. Tentative plans are to consider hosting two additional events prior to year end. Update on Village Volunteers – Diane Stewart Diane Stewart, organizer and leader of the Village Volunteers, reported that things are going well with this group. The Village Volunteers was formed in October 2015 in order to provide special programming for young adults who have special needs. Currently, the group meets on Monday of each week in a two-hour session. Monthly Mailings to New Residents It was reported that Pat Miller is coordinating our monthly mailings to new residents. Generally, approximately 60 mailings are completed each month to those who have purchases homes in Milton. Open Discussion Program – Lisa Ethridge, Retired Fulton County English Teacher  Osher Lifelong Learning Institute – Emory Continuing Education  UGA Master Gardener Extension Volunteer Lisa Ethridge, a retired Fulton County English teacher, was our special speaker for the evening. She now teaches classes at the Emory Continuing Education center for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Lisa told the group that these classes are generally provided to seniors in a variety of subjects. The classes are very reasonably priced and normally are taught over a two-month period. The teachers are all volunteers. In addition, Lisa also is a Master Gardener through the University of Georgia’s Extension Service. Lisa said that there are many ways in which 3 Master Gardeners can volunteer in their communities to assist with beautification efforts. Next Meeting – September 12 – Bethwell Community Center
