The Village Volunteers meet weekly at the Bethwell Community Center from 12 noon to 2:00 pm. City Events in February –  Arbor Day – February 17 at 11:00 am – Broadwell Pavilion Reported that a new tree would be planted at the Broadwell Pavilion on Friday, February 17. In the future, this tree will be the focal point of the annual Milton tree lighting which will begin the Christmas season.  Annual Mayor’s Run – February 25 at 8:00 am – Freedom Park Reported that the Annual Mayor’s Run will be Saturday, February 25 and will begin and end at Freedom Park. This annual event raises funds for needy causes in the Milton area. 2 Projects and Activities –  Milton Cultural Arts Committee – Update Reported that the committee now has five members with two members remaining to be appointed.  Milton Equestrian Committee – Update Reported that this committee also currently has five members with two members remaining to be appointed.  Special Equestrians of Georgia – Update Reported that efforts are underway to assist this organization in Milton that is providing hippotherapy services to children with special needs. Most recently, Richard Owens, a Better Together member and local landscape architect, visited the farm and made several recommendations. These recommendations primarily related to alleviating water issues in and around the facility.  Home Business Expo – Timing is May 2017 at City Hall Plans continue to be discussed for the first home/business expo to be held in Milton. Exact timing for this event continues to be considered.  Better Together Meetings in the Future – o New City Hall in Crabapple o Community Room Reported that future Better Together meetings will be held at the new City Hall in the Community Room. This separately existing structure located immediately adjacent to City Hall will contain AV and other equipment which should easily accommodate our seating and meeting needs.  Volunteers for the City – Current Initiatives Reported that the City is gathering information on non-profits within the area including, in particular, their volunteer needs. The plan is to match these needs with those who have expressed a desire to volunteer in the community. Program – Donna Barron – The Man Who Carved Stone Mountain Donna Barron gave a very interesting talk and slide presentation on her Father, Roy Faulkner, the Chief Carver of the Confederate Monument at Stone Mountain, Georgia. The project had been plagued by conflicts, controversy, financial problems, artistic differences, and physical 3 limitations for over fifty years before Mr. Faulkner began work in 1964. It took him some eight years to complete the work. Donna explained that her Father was a high school graduate and a former U. S. Marine with no formal art training and no experience with working with stone. After her presentation, copies of her book, The Man Who Carved Stone Mountain, were offered for sale to the attendees. Next Meeting – March 13 –  Community Room – New City Hall  Jordan Patterson, Sgt, USA (Ret) – King’s Ridge Christian School - Dean of Middle School Students Announced that the next Better Together meeting would be at the new Milton City Hall in the Community Room on March 13.
