LLC 12555 Birmingham Highway, Building 1, Suite 102 Milton, Georgia 30004 C$ Attn: Board of Zoning Appeals, City of Milton Dear Board Members, As a local resident of Milton, I would like to thank you for serving our community on the Board. i have lived in Milton for several years and have seen wonderful local coffee shops come and go as they have struggled to generate the revenue needed to meet the growing costs of operating a very slim margin coffee business. Yet, it is something that our residents and neighbors enjoy and want within the community. When we decided to open a Starbucks location in Milton, our hope was that a strong and trusted national brand when coupled with local ownership would provide the right mix for a sustainable local community coffee shop. However, that mix stili requires a broad awareness and visibility by customers to support the business, combined with the brand awareness of Starbucks. As you may be aware, we submitted our sign permit application, which was originally approved. It was subsequently pulled when we were made aware that the material and lighting of the signs did not meet the existing City of Milton guidelines. Unfortunately, neither our architect, nor the Starbucks corporate designers identified that the material of the signs was to be made of wood or other material which has the appearance of wood with external lighting. As a result, we made a significant investment in the existing signs. When we designed the signage for the coffee shop, we wanted it to be visible to customers yet discrete enough so as not appear out of place within the community. Even though the signs are not made of wood or similar material to look like wood, we do believe that they blend in well within the community feel that is also important to us. If we were to replace the existing signs with new signage with external illumination, it would result in a material financial burden, As you are likely aware, the costs of construction have increased significantly over the last year, which have already resulted in costs to build out the space that were much higher than expected. We have included several pictures that show the current signage, which we believe provides the necessary customer awareness yet is simple in its look and feel. We respectfully request that the Hoard approve a variance to allow us to utilize the existing backlist signs which are made of white lexan and vinyl. In addition, we request that we be permitted to retain two south facing signs, as one of those signs is underneath the existing decking and stairs and is not keenly visible due to the recessed foundation of the building, which was not in the original architectural renderings we were provided. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, Brian Simmons, owner HOME OF' AGENDA #.
