Sampling Performed: Bulk sample collection for asbestos analysis by Polarized Light Microscopy as specified in appendix E, 40 CFR part 763. Background Information The site consists of a one-story single-family residence with a crawlspace. The structure is scheduled for demolition. The client asked Air Allergen & Mold Testing to perform an asbestos survey at the site to be compliant with state and federal regulations. General Information Concerning Asbestos Asbestos is the name given to several naturally occurring fibrous minerals that have a high resistance to heat and most chemicals. Some types of asbestos include chrysotile, crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite, tremolite, and actinolite. Prior to the 1970's, asbestos was commonly used as insulation in buildings due to its fire -retardant properties. Asbestos fibers were also utilized as binding agents in the manufacture of many different types of building materials. Exposure to asbestos Asbestosis is a serious, fibers that irritate lung fibers may result long-term condition tissues resulting in in potential health hazards. caused by inhaling asbestos permanent scarring. Asbestos exposure has also been definitively linked with lung cancer and a rare form of cancer called mesothelioma, which has an extremely high mortality rate. Federal regulations require the removal of friable asbestos containing materials prior to building demolition or renovation as indicated in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Emissions Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) (see 40 CFR Part 61 Subpart M). EPA NESHAP defines friable materials as any materials which can easily be crumbled, pulverized or reduced to powder by hand pressure. Sample Details Air Allergen and Mold Testing, Inc. performed an asbestos survey at the site. Tim Gordineer, an AHERA accredited inspector, performed the inspection and collected samples of suspect materials on September 16, 2020. Materials sampled at the site include drywall, joint compound, ceiling texture, stapled ceiling tile, and ceiling fiber board. The samples were collected using clean sampling tools and placed into individually labeled containers. The samples were shipped along with the chain of custody to EMSL laboratories located in Smyrna, Georgia for analysis by Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) method as indicated in appendix E, subpart E, 40 CFR part 763. EMSL Analytical, Inc. is listed by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) as an accredited asbestos laboratory under the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP). The EPA defines an asbestos containing material (ACM) as a material with an asbestos content greater than one percent. Analytic Results Analytic results indicate that none of the samples contain regulated quantities of asbestos. However, the joint compound and ceiling texture do contain trace amounts of asbestos, and therefore falls under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA's) asbestos construction standard (29 CFR 1926.1101). This standard indicates that OSHA requirements must be followed for all work with asbestos materials, regardless of airborne exposures or asbestos content. These requirements are to utilize wet methods, to the extent feasible, (paragraph (g)(1)(ii)); and to promptly clean up and dispose in closed containers, waste and debris contaminated with asbestos, (paragraph (g)(1)(iii)), Laboratory data sheets are attached to this report. Limitations Asbestos can be found in a wide range of different materials. For this survey, Air Allergen attempted to identify all suspect materials encountered at the site. However, there may be other materials present that were inaccessible, hidden, or otherwise not sampled. When encountered, any suspect material should be treated as an asbestos containing material until proven otherwise through analysis by a qualified laboratory.
