HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolutions 22-08-616 - 08/15/2022 - Vision Zero GoalSTATE OF GEORGIA RESOLUTION NO. - - I(P COUNTY OF FULTON ' A RESOLUTION ADOPTING A VISION ZERO GOAL FOR THE CITY OF MILTON WHEREAS, on March 15, 2021, the City Council of the City of Milton ("City") unanimously approved the 2021-2025 Strategic Plan which included a goal of reducing vehicular -related personal injury and fatal crashes by 5%year-over-year; and WHEREAS, from 2016-2020 there were 2,926 crashes in the City including 241 minor injuries, 35 which included a serious injury and 7 crashes which included a fatality; and WHEREAS, it is the role of government to do its part to serve and protect the general public; and WHEREAS, the on August 1, 2022, the City Council adopted a "Local Road Safety Plan": and WHEREAS, the Local Road Safety Plan's mission and recommendation is to provide a transportation system that is safe, offers a diversity of travel, and allows the City's citizens and visitors to traverse safely and calmly throughout the City; and WHEREAS, the Local Road Safety Plan was developed with significant community input through a diverse range of outreach activities; and WHEREAS, the Local Road Safety Plan gives the City a toolbox of data -driven countermeasures that can be deployed on public local streets immediately to begin improving safety; and WHEREAS, Transportation Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax (TSPLOST) funding recently passed in November 2021 provides a consistent revenue stream over the next five years to begin addressing transportation safety concerns around the City; and WHEREAS, in 2014, cities across the country began establishing "Vision Zero" goals which are strategies intended to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all; and WHEREAS, as of August 2022, 53 cities across the country have committed to a Vision Zero goal, including 2 in Georgia; and WHEREAS, a Vision Zero commitment requires effort across the City's Public Works, Police and Communications Departments to ensure that the Engineering, Enforcement and Education strategies outlined in the Local Road Safety Plan are being delivered; and WHEREAS, a Vision Zero commitment also requires effort from residents, business ' owners and visitors to the City, acting as individuals and collectively through neighborhood and advocacy organizations to improve the safety, comfort and mobility of the City's public streets for all users; and BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the City of Milton commits to a goal of zero deaths and serious injuries as a result of crashes on City streets by 2032.
