HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-06-09 MinutesMilton Disability Awareness Committee Meeting Minutes Wednesday, May 6, 2049, 7:00 p.m. Executive Conference Room, Milton City Hall The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. In attendance were Committee members Tib, Ann, Gary, Van, Marcia, Ann, Laura and alga. Also in attendance were Linda Blow, City Staff, Marie Latta ADA Consultant, and guest Vince Catanzaro. The minutes of the April meeting were approved. Parks and Rec report was made and the following items came out of the discussion: I . MDAC will develop and make specific recommendations for questions to be included on the Parks and Rec survey. 2. The early investment by Milton in an accessible Parks and Rec system will result in a long term payoff for the City in the form of increased tax base as interested seniors and others buy here. This is a basic concept that needs to be emphasized constantly. 3. Committee members will email the rest of the Committee after sister Committee meetings. Laura will compile these reports and send an email update to Council and Mayor. Committee members will follow the email update by Laura with personal contact with their Council member regarding the update. 4. Tina D'Aversa has informed Ann that David Tolleson is working to form a Special Recreation. Association in North Fulton where all North Fulton Cities share services provided for people with disabilities. A City Councilperson and citizen from each city will form the group working on this initiative. Bike and Ped Path meeting was cancelled this month, The Milton Trail Plan document adopted by the City includes a statement regarding accessibility on page 51 that MDAC proposes to amend in such a way that it will reflect the commitment made by the Council and Mayor to build an inclusive and accessible City from the ground up as well as bring the accessibility statement into compliance with the ADA. MDAC will develop and present the proposed amendment to City Manager. Planning/Permitting participation will be discussed with City Manager, Alice Wakefield, Melissa Henderson and MDAC members as soon as a meeting can be arranged. 1. Require accessibility packet as part of development plan to be reviewed by MDAC. ASCD Workshop, creating communities for everyone — June 2nd and 3rd. Ann has obtained approval for Milton Council, Mayor, and MDAC to attend. Cost is $140. Marie Latta, ADA Consultant, reported she is reviewing Milton ordinances for ADA Title II requirements. These include examining each program for physical barriers, reviewing policies and procedures for exclusion and the justification for exclusion, and effective communication including emergency service. The upcoming Public Safety Fair will include Access information. The idea of a meeting of all City Committee Chairs to discuss the element of accessibility was discussed.
