HomeMy WebLinkAboutMDAC MINS 10 08 14MIITcYN ~ ESTABLISHED 2006 Milton Disability Awareness Committee Meeting Minutes October 8,2014 Committee Members In Attendance: Tass Welch, Ken Woods, Nancilee Wolfe, Van Black, Dudley Arnold and Paul Schiell MDAC Liaison: Sudie Gordon Guests in Attendance: NjA Tass Welch called the meeting to order. Committee members reviewed and approved the meeting minutes from September 14, 2014. Van Black made the motion to approve the minutes and Nancilee Wolfe seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. (6-0) New Business: • Paul opened up and discussed the value of our committee working with a variety of students and schools. Students are a great resource for MDAC and could add a new and different perspective on a number of issues. • Having MDAC do presentations to students about disabilities could be a wonderful thing for our committee and the community. • MDAC could also have students participate in activities various festivals and activities where we have booths. • Ken mentioned Law Day . That is a day designated for lawyers to attend schools and discuss the day in the life of an attorney. • Nancilee mentioned that 4th graders at Summit Hill Elementary School read a particular book about a person with disabilities. This would be a great opportunity for MDAC to come and speak with those students. • Summit Hill also holds an in-school field trip day where we could possibly set up a booth or display and educate students more on disabilities. • Reaching out to Special Education Departments at different schools would be a great way just to get MDAC in the door at various places. • Paul and Nancilee are continuing to look at different ways MDAC can pursue speaking at schools. • Nancilee also mentioned that the flicks and food truck nights might be a good opportunity for MDAC to set up a table or booth and spread awareness about the committee. We could also have a display or van from Sue's store and maybe some activities as well . • The committee then discussed the possibility of a speakers bureau for adults. Nancilee brought up the fact that everyone is affected by some kind of disability at some point in life . • MDAC could be an excellent resource for adults who face various challenges in life. Page 1 of2 Old Business: • Community Pet Day has been moved from November 2014 to March of 2015. Tass will provide more details as we get closer to March. • The booth at the Crabapple Festival was a great success overall. Most people attending the festival were looking for crafts and goodies to purchase, but the MDAC booth did pull some people in. • Paul and Tass had a long discussion with a woman who wanted to vent about a number of items. The lady ultimately stated she would be interested in attending an MDAC meeting at some point. • The display from Sue's store was a huge attraction. A number of people stopped to ask questions about the various pieces of equipment • All of the materials were great at drawing people into the MDAC booth. • Dudley brought Mossy, a service dog in training, and she was also good at attracting people to the booth. • As Tass stated, there was much to be learned from listening to people. • The MDAC booth could not offer activities or games due to the small space we were given. However, no booth had large amount of space at this particular event. • The parking was also tight and offered a very small amount of handicapped accessible spaces. • Tass met a couple of teachers and the owner of the Goddard School in Alpharetta the festival. She was able to speak with them at length and provide them with lots of information on MDAC. • The Goddard School owner is interested in connecting with MDAC and working with the committee on some activities. • The committee then discussed more about festivals and booths in general. MDAC is trying to figure out the best ways to attract and engage people at these types of events. Tass Welch moved to adjourn the meeting. Ken Woods motioned to adjourn and Van Black seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous to adjourn. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 12,2014.
