HomeMy WebLinkAboutMDAC Meeting Minutes 05 13 15MIITOl\J "' ESTABLI SHED 2006 Milton Disability Awareness Committee Meeting Minutes May 13,2015 Committee Members In Attendance: Hope Winograd, Tass Welch, Nancilee Wolfe, Dudley Arnold and Paul Schiell MDAC Liaison: Sudie Gordon Guests in Attendance: Jason Wright (City of Milton), James Keating , Jan Williamson and Diane Stewart Tass Welch called the meeting to order and Paul Schiell seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. (5-0) Committee members reviewed and approved the meeting minutes from April8, 2015 . Nancilee Wolfe made the motion to approve the minutes and Hope Winograd seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. (5-0) New Business: • Jason Wright (City of Milton) took the floor first to discuss a new social media policy put in place by the city. • It's important for all people to be smart about posts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and all other social media platforms. • City employees cannot tie personal business ventures to the City of Milton. • Posts regarding hate speech, libel, sexual harassment and private health information regarding another individual are some of the categories not protected by the First Amendment. • An individual 's professional persona must match their online persona this day in time. • The feedback from Earth Day 2015 was quite positive. • The Titans basketball team was a huge success and certainly a huge draw to the MDAC booth at Earth Day . • The location of the booth seemed to have ups and downs. • The question of whether or not to have a tent at first events was also discussed. • A tent is great for inclement weather, but might make it harder for people clearly see the MDAC booth. • James mentioned that having an individual dressed in a costume and walking around the festival might help attract people to future MDAC tables and the Titan challenge. • The accessibility of Friendship Park is phenomenal and certainly is a big advantage for MDAC at city events. Old Business: • Community Pet Day is s et for May 17, 2015 at Community Church of Christ in Milton. • The event was a great success in 2014 and drew lots of interest from a variety of people. • Tass received lots of positive feedback after the 2014 event and many people are eagerly awaiting the 2015 festivities . • Pirelli will be attending to represent the Canine Assistants booth. • Hope will be attending and setting up a booth to represent her non-profit organization. • Members of the Milton Police and Fire Department will be present at Community Pet Day . • MDAC is also planning to participate in the Milton 4 th of July parade, which will take place in the Crabapple area. • The parade is a half-mile long and features decorated wagons, bicycles, pedestrians and more. • The MDAC booth will be located in the vendor area near the Broadwell Pavilion. • Increasing awareness is a major way MDAC can continue to help make an impact in Milton . • Diane and Jan mentioned to MDAC a special project in which Diane and her family are participating. • This project will help increase funding in Georgia for families with children or other family members with disabilities. • MDAC members and guests agree that Milton and areas of North Fulton need to offer more activities for people with special needs. • Driving to Atlanta, Decatur and other areas of Metro Atlanta simply is not practical. • Increasing the number of activities for special needs people transferring to adulthood in this area is something that MDAC feels good about. • Members feel that lots of excitement is going within the committee at the moment. Hope Winograd moved to adjourn the meeting and Dudley Arnold seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous to adjourn. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, 2015.
