RESOLUTION NO. 07-04-27
CITY OF MILTON
A RESOLUTION OPPOSING THE CURRENT PROPOSAL TO EXTEND THE
ONE PERCENT SALES TAX FOR MARTA
WHEREAS, MARTA is proposing to extend the one percent sales tax in Fulton
County now used to support MARTA operations; and
WHEREAS, Mayor & Council recognize the important role of MARTA in
addressing regional transportation needs; and
WHEREAS, all Fulton County citizens contribute to support MARTA through a
one percent sales tax on items they purchase in Fulton County; and
WHEREAS, the plans proposed by MARTA that would use the money generated by
the extension of the one percent sales tax do not include any North Fulton capital
expenditures and do not directly benefit North Fulton citizens; and
WHEREAS, the proposal to extend the one percent sales tax does not include a
referendum to be voted upon by the citizens of Fulton County on an issue that should
appropriately be put to the voters of Fulton County;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Milton hereby expresses
its opposition to the extension of the current one percent sales tax for MARTA, as currently
proposed, because it does not include provisions for MARTA capital expenditures in North
Fulton, nor for any direct benefit to the citizens of North Fulton, and because it seeks to
impose such extension without a vote by the citizens of Fulton County, which should be
subject to a public referendum.
The above Resolution was read and approved by the Mayor and Council of the City of
Milton, Georgia on the 12« day of April, 2007.
