A RESOLUTION OPPOSING TII F. CU RRENT I'ROPOSAL TO F.XTF.ND THF.
ONF.PF.RCENT SALES TAX FOR MARTA
\VII EREAS.MAltTA is proposing to extend the one percent sales tax in Fulton
Count)' now used to support MARTA operations; and
\VII EREAS. Mayor & Co uncil recognize th e important role of MARTA in
a ddressing regional transpo rtation needs; a nd
\VII ER EAS. all Fulton County citizens con tribute to support MARTA through a
one percent sales tax on items they purchase in Fulton Count)'; and
WH EREAS, the plans proposed by MARTA that would use the money generated by
the exten sion of the one percent sa les tax do not include an)' North Fulton capital
expenditures and do not directly benefit North Fulton citizens; and
\VIIEREAS, the proposal to extend the one percent sales tax does not include a
referendum to be voted up on by the citizens of Fulton County on a n issue that should
appropriately be put to the vo ters of Fulton County:
NO\V,T HERE FORE. DE IT RESOLVED that the Cit), of Milton hereby expresses
its opposition to the exte nsion of the current one percent sales tax for MARTA ,as currently
proposed, because it docs not include provisions for M AI~.TA capital expenditures in No rtb
Fulton,nor for any direct benefit to the citizens of North Fulton, and because it seeks to
impose such extension without a vote by the citizens of Fulton County, which should be
subject to a public referendum.
The above Resolution was read a nd approved by the Mal ar a nd Council of the City of
Milton, Georgia on th e 12''' day of April,2007.
